Patrick Wiscombe:

Welcome to the Inside Travel Talk podcast and radio show for Saturday, April 20th 2024. My name is Patrick Wiscombe. Mark Faldmo is just getting into the studio, and he brought treats. The Dunford chocolate covered donuts are my absolute favorite. You did not know it and yet you brought me one.

Mark Faldmo:

Thank you I love the donuts chocolate, chocolate donuts yeah, chocolate cake donuts are my absolute favorite.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Yeah, thank you. And the diet coke are you a diet coke person or are you kind of soda out?

Mark Faldmo:

I actually haven't drunk a soda in years.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Oh, really so I didn't know that I was a coke guy.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Then it changed to uh, dr pepper, and then the last two years I've not had any soda that's impressive coming up on this edition of the Inside Travel Talk podcast and radio show, always in segment one, the hot travel deal of the week. We're going to talk about a trip to the Canadian Rockies and I just thought this story was funny that Oakland wants to be San Francisco, they're not, and Uber's new safety features. So those are three of the stories that we'll talk about in today's episode, but as we get the show started, I thought this story was kind of funny. This is an American Airlines story, and they are relaxing part of its pet policy to let owners bring their pets and a full-size carry-on bag into the cabin. I'm not sure how I feel about bringing pets inside the airplane. Please just don't.

Mark Faldmo:

I've been on a couple flights where people have had a hard time and insist on changing seats because of their pet allergies, whether it's a cat or small dog, and it does cause some issues. People do love their pets.

Patrick Wiscombe:

A little too much sometimes. Until this week, people who brought a pet into the cabin on the plane involved paying a $150 fee. Could only have one other item that fit under the seat Anything bigger like a carry-on bag with wheels needed to be checked for a $35 fee, or they could put the pet in cargo hold. So they're relaxing the policy. Okay, yeah, just don't bring them. The Oakland International Airport Isn't the airport code? I think it's OAK, that's correct. Okay, the Oakland International Airport may add quote San Francisco to its name to attract more passengers. Quote San Francisco to its name to attract more passengers. Oakland airport officials say travelers unfamiliar with the region fly into San Francisco's airport even if their destination is closer to the East Bay Airport. Modifying the name to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport is what is being reported, but the airport's three-letter code will stay OAK.

Mark Faldmo:

I think that's interesting because what they're saying is correct Oakland Airport is actually closer to downtown San Francisco than San Francisco Airport. Whenever I go to San Francisco, I fly into Oakland.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Do you really yes?

Mark Faldmo:

Oh, if you're there during peak periods, driving over the Bay Bridge can take a while, but it is literally basically across the bridge and you're to downtown San Francisco.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Let's get to the hot travel deal of the week. This is always in segment one, and we're going to talk about traveling to the Rocky Mountains, the Canadian Rockies. This is called the. Is it the Rocky Mountaineer?

Mark Faldmo:

Yep the Rocky Mountaineer. For train enthusiasts that also love scenery, this is the product for you. They actually just started up for their season this week, April 15th or 16th, and their offer is save up to a thousand dollars per couple on a round trip journey. Their product is you either start or end in Vancouver, British Columbia, which is a great place to start, and then you travel through the Canadian Rockies, and you'll visit places like Lake Louise, Banff, Jasper, a lot of UNESCO World Heritage History sites. And then, one thing that's interesting, during COVID they also started a route called Rockies to the Red Rocks, goes from Denver to Moab, Utah.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Heather, does she like trains? She does. I think that they would enjoy doing this. I think we should go do this. We should look at it. Especially $1,000 per couple on round-trip journeys. I wouldn't mind starting in Vancouver. What's this particular one where they go?

Mark Faldmo:

to Banff. So the one that we're looking at is called the First Passage to the West, which includes Vancouver, Kamloops, Lake Louise and Banff, Booked by April 30th. So you have 10 days from today to book that. Another unique thing about this is it's a several-day journey, but you don't actually sleep on the train. You train during the day, see things during the day, and at night they put you in hotels.

Patrick Wiscombe:

I don't know that I could do sleep on a train. That's actually a really important point. I just assume it was like Amtrak, yeah.

Mark Faldmo:

No it's—although if you do a sleeper car on a train. I have done that in Sweden and I loved it really so.

Patrick Wiscombe:

See, that's interesting, because then you could just go enjoy everything and you're not traveling at night, missing more scenery, correct? Oh see, I love that idea.

Mark Faldmo:

yeah, and you know, see, I've often wanted to take the train from Salt Lake to Denver to see that, but that train leaves at midnight. You do all the scenery at night. So, although I guess if you do it the other way, you see it in the daytime Anyway.

Patrick Wiscombe:

By the way, do they call you to book that? Yes, it is the Rocky Mountaineer first passage to the west. Let's absolutely do this. Let's talk after the show, because I know that Nikki would absolutely do that. Call Mark in the office to book that vacation, 888-718-7717. 888-718-7717. When we come back, it's the Just Cruising segment where we have the cruise news of the week and we also have the cruise deal of the week, always in segment two. If you've always wanted to see the Northern Lights, stay tuned. You do not want to miss this next segment. That is next when the Inside Travel Talk podcast and radio show continues Alongside. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your Saturday morning About quarter past the hour here in Salt Lake City, alongside the great Mark Faldino. Sometimes oh, the Faldino, sometimes the Faldino, sometimes that's how it's pronounced. Is it really Fladmo, fladmo? Yeah, oh, faldmo, okay.

Mark Faldmo:

I've never heard anyone call you Fladmo. You should look at the AI transcripts of the podcast and see the 20 different versions of FALDMO that it comes up with, the FLABMO. It'll be interesting to see this episode. What the computer?

Patrick Wiscombe:

generates for FALDMO, the great Faldini Coming up in this segment of the show. It's the Just Cruising segment, always in segment number two. Let's get to the Just Cruising segment, always in segment number two. Let's get to the Just Cruising portion of the show. We're going to talk about the Northern Lights, so stay tuned. That's coming up here in just a moment, but before we get there, let's go to the travel news of the week.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Now, the only reason I'm bringing this up is because Nikki and I have been traveling quite a bit lately and we've gotten pretty familiar with Uber. But if you haven't seen the update to the app, there's some pretty interesting things going on here. Uber riders can now opt into Uber's safety features, such as pin verification. So before you even get in the car, the driver should ask hey, what's the pin number? They entered it on their phone. They're like okay, hop in the car. So you just verify that you're with the right person. The in-app emergency button which you have seen, and audio recording effective immediately. Travelers will be able to set a specific day and time in the app to turn on PIN verification, which will automatically be required to start a trip during the chosen times. I couldn't even get in the car until I gave them the PIN number.

Mark Faldmo:

Two weeks ago in Las Vegas. I did not need to do that. Oh, you did not.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Travelers will also be able to schedule the share my trip. So anytime I've jumped in an Uber, I always share it with, of course, Nikki. If she's not with me, I share it with my son Brandon, my son Nathan. It will automatically send your location when they're picked up or dropped off within 50 meters of a bar or restaurant. Riders also have access to an in-app emergency button if they feel like they're in danger. In addition, uber said riders now have the ability to turn on the audio recording feature for every trip, so if something does go wrong, the encrypted recording will be shared with Uber. I have enabled all of those features and I have used them a few times. Now and my son Brandon goes. I thought I was just getting Uber junk text. I didn't know what was going on. Just interesting some of the safety features that they're putting in place. In other travel news, delta Airlines has a new boarding procedure, so let's talk about the old procedure and then let's talk about the new procedure.

Mark Faldmo:

Yeah, so the current procedure is those that need early boarding are boarded first.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Yeah, like vets and people in wheelchairs, just slow boarders. Yeah, pre-boarders.

Mark Faldmo:

Yeah, pre, yeah, like vets and people in wheelchairs, just slow boarders, yeah, pre-boarders, yeah, pre, yeah. And then they have first class, and then they do diamond medallion members, and then they do comfort plus, and then they do sky, and then they do main one, main two, main three, and then they had basic economy. So those were the main boarding groups on Delta. Now they're just going similar to what other airlines are doing. They're going to have zone one, which is first class, zone two, which is diamond medallion members, zone three, which is comfort plus, zone four, which is the sky. It's really not a change in how they're boarding, it's just a change in the names of the boarding zones.

Patrick Wiscombe:

So it's the same thing, that they're just rebranding it the names. Yes, yeah, one of the best things that you did for me personally just while we're here is when we did Delta one, um, when we flew from Salt Lake to Hawaii and Hawaii back to Salt Lake on Delta One. That was money well spent. That was delightful. To fall asleep on the plane yeah, I mean, actually go to sleep, it is.

Mark Faldmo:

Nothing like the lay flat seats on any airline. Yeah, that's pretty good. It's a good way to fly?

Patrick Wiscombe:

Yeah, it is. Let's get to the cruise deal of the week. And if you've never seen the Northern Lights, it's one of those things where you see the green in the sky, a little bit of yellow, a little bit of white. It is special. I saw them in Alaska. I sent Mark a picture of what I was looking at and he goes yeah, that's pretty good. Hurtigruten has a Northern Lights guarantee and this is going to be our cruise deal of the week. It is spectacular. I can't even put it into words. When you see it, you'll go, man. I'm glad I did this. What are the conditions of this For?

Mark Faldmo:

this any sailing between October 1st and March 31st. They have a Northern Lights guarantee and if you don't see Northern Lights, they'll give you a six or seven day voyage on them again.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Well, you get another trip, you get another trip.

Mark Faldmo:

Yeah, that's pretty good. So Norwegian Coastal Voyages is a pretty unique cruise line. I wouldn't necessarily even say it's a cruise line because it runs almost like ferry service up the coast of Norway. So in six days you might have 20 or 30 stops. Oh, that many. Yeah, they do run excursions, but you'll get off in one stop and then you'll meet the ship in another. Different things like that is how they run, that they have several different options. They have the original Coastal Express, but you can do as long as 14 or 18-day sailings that go round-trip Oslo. They go all the way up into the Arctic Circle. So it's a very unique opportunity to really experience the beauty of Norway. And they have six nights as their shortest and then they go on up. They do have some special that are longer, in the 20, 21-day range, but it's just a great way to see.

Patrick Wiscombe:

It genuinely is a special experience when you see the Northern Lights. Yes, If you want to book that vacation, you can book this one right.

Mark Faldmo:

Yes, I can book this one and they run year round. The Northern Lights guarantee is just that October through March dates. Okay, so they run this all summer. Great way to see Norway.

Patrick Wiscombe:

You almost don't want to see them, so you can go do it again. Yes, here's hoping there's no lights, no lights. I guess they don't have a see them, so you can go do it again. Yes, here's hoping there's no lights, no lights. I guess they don't have a guarantee on how bright it is, do they?

Patrick Wiscombe:

no, they have a whole definition of what consists, as a occurrence of the northern light I can just see the legal department going okay, we need to uh specify how great this is going to be. Yeah, when we come back we're talking about Tahiti. That's a destination spotlight. That is next when the Inside Travel Talk podcast and radio show continues. If you want to book any of the vacations that we've already talked about the Rocky Mountaineer and the Hurtigruten Northern Lights Guarantee Call Mark in his office, 888-718-7717, 888-718-7717. Patrick Wiscombe:

All aboard segment three of the Inside Travel Talk podcast and radio show. I got a text a little bit earlier this week from my neighbor Devin and he goes why do you guys always play that disclaimer at? He's noticed that it's always at the top of the show when it starts at six minutes past the hour and we always played in the third segment, the beginning of segment three, and the disclaimer basically means capacity controlled, meaning there's only a certain number of seats that we can sell to the public and prices change not because we change it, but because it really is dependent on availability of what's being sold Really.

Mark Faldmo:

Yep, so people, especially those listening in the podcast, might listen to this two or three weeks after the fact. Yeah, and those offers might have expired or might have sold out, and so that's why we play it, just to let people know that everything was valid at the time we talked about it, but is subject to change. Thank you.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Devin, and that was the answer that I gave. But if he's asking that question, I know other listeners are going. I wonder why they do that. Yeah, are going. I wonder why they do that. Coming up in this segment, it's the destination spotlight and one of Mark's favorite locations to go in this entire planet, Tahiti. We're going to talk about that as the destination spotlight, but what started this whole thing is we got a text from one of his clients. His name is John. He goes what is the best way to see Tahiti? We're going to get to that here in just a minute, but before we do, a couple of pieces of travel news that you need to be aware of. For the first time since the pandemic, China is allowing foreign climbers to access mount Everest through Tibet. There are a maximum of 300 permits available annually for non-Chinese climbers. So there you go.

Mark Faldmo:

Yeah, that's interesting. I didn't even know you would climb Mount Everest from Tibet.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Yeah, I didn't either, I've always heard from Nepal. Yeah, nice, quiet Nepal. Yeah, We've talked about Venice on this podcast, going to Italy a number of weeks ago and we've covered it periodically throughout the last, you know, three to four months, but it's taking effect on April 29th and we're going to try and tell you how to dodge Venice's new day trip tourist tax, which takes effect, as I mentioned, in about nine days from now, April 29th.

Mark Faldmo:

If you do stay at a hotel in Venice, you don't have to pay the tax. This is only if you're coming in for a day trip. So the entrance points to the city of Venice. There'll be kiosks and a QR code where you can pay the tax, and then authorities just randomly are going to ask people for the receipts. Oh really If you don't have the receipt, the fine is anywhere from 60 to 300 US dollars.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Well, they're not messing around.

Mark Faldmo:

So you don't want to dodge that tax I think it's like five or $10 or something like that but you do want to make sure you get that tax to go into Venice and again, you don't need it. If you are staying in a hotel in Venice, I would recommend, if you can spend the night there. It's so lovely in the evening in Venice when all of the day, tourists that this is geared at leave.

Patrick Wiscombe:

What time of the year were you there or what times of the year have you been there, since you've been there a few times, yeah.

Mark Faldmo:

I've been there mainly in April, May and September, October, but I've also been there in September.

Patrick Wiscombe:

So it was really pleasant. Yes, by the way, john is saying thank you, yeah, so let's just address it. What is the best way to see Tahiti? And you've been there what? Five or six times? Five or six times, wow. What's the best way to see the island?

Mark Faldmo:

First of all, we have to define what he's asking for in Tahiti. Most people say Tahiti, but Tahiti is one island in French Polynesia. Most people when they think of Tahiti, they're thinking of Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea, which is French Polynesia, and those are the society islands of French Polynesia. There are several ways you can see it. There's three different options regular options on cruise ships. There's Paul Gaugin Cruise Line. Which Is it? Palgo Palgogon, oh, , the name after the artist which sails around the Society Islands. There's also Windstar Cruise Lines, which is a tall ship sailboat that sails around the islands. And then there's Aranui, which we've talked about before, which is the half cruise ship, half cargo ship.

Patrick Wiscombe:

And you like that.

Mark Faldmo:

I love that. It mainly does the Marquesas Islands, but it does do ports in the Society Islands, or what most people think of when they say Tahiti. And then there's obviously the going there and staying by land. So we'll talk about the staying by land. Personally, I prefer to stay on the island of Moorea, which is actually a short ferry ride from the island of Tahiti. It's a small island. I love to drive around it. It has a lot of the iconic, iconic scenes that you see when you think of Tahiti beautiful yeah, very scenic yeah, and then bora bora is the next.

Mark Faldmo:

I've never actually stayed on Bora Bora. I've been there several times, but everyone wants to go there. It is very beautiful but it's also more expensive compared to Morea. And then the island of Tahiti. There are some good resorts there and you could stay there and you could do a day trip to Morea if you wanted. I just prefer to stay on Morea. Where do you like to stay? On Moorea, the two that I like are the Sophie tell hotel and the Hilton. Both have your typical what you think of of Tahiti, so they have overwater bungalows, they have beachfront bureaus and then they have kind of regular garden view rooms. So, depending on what you want to do, if you can afford it, the overwater bungalows are fabulous and wonderful to stay in.

Patrick Wiscombe:

If you're going to go, you might as well really go.

Mark Faldmo:

Yes, and the ships actually are a pretty good way to see it as well. You'll get to see a lot more islands and a little bit more adventure, but if you want just a laid back vacation, you know, I think Moraya is the way to go.

Patrick Wiscombe:

John. I hope that answers the question. Book it through Mark and if you have I mean obviously you're going to have some additional questions Just call him directly. His phone number is 888-718-7717, 888-718-7717. 888-718-7717. Thank you for your text which, by the way, if you have questions during the show, you can call or text us Different number 801-649-3700. Patrick Wiscombe:

One of the highlights of my life, and every single week, is to sit here in the Wiscombe-Faldmo studio to do the radio show with my friend, mark Faldmo. You are listening to the Inside Travel Talk podcast and radio show. Final segment of the show for this Saturday, April 20th. 20th Coming up in this segment we're going to be talking about Delta Airlines, how much money they made, British Airways and the top summer destinations for Google flights and if you have any questions or travel-related questions, last call for phone calls 801-649-3700. All right, let's get to the travel news of the week for this last segment. Let's start with Delta Airlines. This is just a quick mention. Delta reported a $37 million profit on revenue of $13.75 billion. Man, that is a razor, razor, razor thin profit margin.

Patrick Wiscombe:

I know it's a lot of money, but man 13.75 billion and to only book 37 million yikes it's an expensive business, yeah it sure is expensive equipment, expensive fuel British Airways is making it easier for passengers in the United States to fly with them or on them with a new limited time status match offer. Eligible customers who apply by May 7th so basically, we hear about the next two to three weeks will receive either British Airways silver or gold status for six months, with the availability to extend that to a full year with the purchase of two qualifying flights. The eligible airlines include Delta, air Canada, Lufthansa, united Airlines, air France, KLM, Scandinavian Airlines and Virgin.

Mark Faldmo:

Atlantic Getting that status match if you have status with another airline. One thing that's interesting about British Airways is that highest tier gold comes. Interesting about British Airways is that highest tier gold comes with the British Airways lounge access. Have you ever been in one? I have not. A lot of European airlines you don't get seat assignments until the day of, but if you're a member of their frequent flyer program just a basic member with no flights you usually get 24 access in advance to choose tickets and then as you move up the ladder like for instance, silver and gold here on British Airways you can choose your seats at the time of purchase.

Patrick Wiscombe:

It is nice choosing your seat. Yes, I thought you would find this interesting. These are the top summer destinations according to Google Flights. We're going to give you the top 10, and, if time permitting, we'll extend the list. But let's go one to 10 here. This list reflects searches on Google flights between June 1st and August 31st 2024. Let's go number one to number 10,. Number one London, which is one of your favorite places.

Mark Faldmo:

Yeah, I love London. I'm actually planning two trips right now for clients to London, and it's not me and it's not you, yeah.

Patrick Wiscombe:

In case Nikki is listening you know.

Mark Faldmo:

London, wonderful sights Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, tower of London.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Number two is Paris.

Mark Faldmo:

Oh Paris. With the Olympics coming, I expect that to be near the top, as it is. Number three is Tokyo. Tokyo, and that's interesting. This is the only Asian city on the list.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Number four is Rome. You've been there a few times.

Mark Faldmo:

I've been to Rome several times and Rome is always on top of the list. In fact, I think the last two years Italy was the number one country visited the last two years.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Oh, really Okay.

Mark Faldmo:

So Rome is a great place. Lots of history there, forum, colosseum, go see the Trevi Fountain.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Number five this is a personal favorite only because I lived there for two years. New York City Loved it there. Times Square, the tourist traps, you can't go wrong. Go see a Yankees game, go see Mets, the September 11th Memorial All you have to do is walk outside and just choose a direction yes, and you'll see something. Number six Cancun.

Mark Faldmo:

And I can see that being up near the top. Cancun, very popular beach destination, lots of things to do from the archaeological sites, all-inclusive hotels. Number seven is Orlando, great family destination Universal Studios, SeaWorld and Walt Disney World. My favorite thing actually there is to go to Port Canaveral and go to the Kennedy Space Center.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Okay, now are we, no wait? Are we going to Orlando for the Bahamas cruise? No, no, no, it's um. We're going to Port Canaveral. Yeah, I'm excited to go do that. Number eight Las Vegas. Number nine Seattle.

Mark Faldmo:

Yeah, that surprises me that that's that high, but it is a lovely destination to go to and number 10, I think you have been here, Athens, Greece.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Yes, I've been to Athens. Is that where you did Coke and olives?

Mark Faldmo:

Not Coke.

Patrick Wiscombe:

I'm sorry, not Coke, Coca-Cola and olives.

Mark Faldmo:

No, that was in Santorini. It was in the same country. So just a side note, Patrick's thing. My wife and I went to Santorini on a cruise, and it was pretty crowded. We didn't want to deal with the crowd, so we got on a rooftop cafe and had Coca-cola and olives and people watched all day.

Patrick Wiscombe:

it was actually a wonderful afternoon since we have just a little bit of time left, let's go 11 through 20 Los Angeles, which is a great city. Can't say that it's great now, but la is pretty great place to live when it was not a dump. Number 12 is Miami. Number 13, Barcelona Number 14. I do want to go to Dublin. In fact, when we do the British Isles tour, it does go to Dublin. Yeah, Dublin's a wonderful town. Fort Lauderdale 15, , which we will be there literally on Monday night. Yes, yeah, awesome. Number 16, Honolulu was just there and you've been there 20 times. Can't go wrong with Hawaii, nope. Number 17 is Denver Interesting.

Mark Faldmo:

Kind of like Seattle. Interesting.

Patrick Wiscombe:

Well, Seattle's more interesting than Denver?

Mark Faldmo:

Yes, yeah, Denver's number 18, Madrid, another city in Spain, so Spain gets two in the top 10.

Patrick Wiscombe:

There Top 20 actually 19 is Boston.

Mark Faldmo:

I've never been there. I love Boston. Walk the Freedom Trail. Freedom Trail is the sites of the American Revolution in Boston. Oh, I see that. So you walk around to the North Church and One if by land, two if by sea.

Patrick Wiscombe:

The last one on this list is San Juan, Puerto Rico. San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Mark Faldmo:

How many times you've been there? Been there five or six times. It's becoming more popular for people that don't have passports, that want to get away to what feels like a foreign country.

Patrick Wiscombe:
